First: Do you need a formal date-of-death appraisal before selling?

When a collector passes away, heirs generally receive a "step-up" in cost basis to the artwork's fair market value as of the date of death. If the estate requires a probate inventory, a federal estate tax filing, or an equitable division among siblings, a USPAP-compliant estate art appraisal establishes that baseline before anything is moved or sold.

If the estate is simple and the family only wants to know what the art can sell for right now, a sale-oriented collection review may be all you need.

How to sort high-value works from decorative contents

In almost every Florida estate—whether in Sarasota, Palm Beach, Naples, Tampa, Miami or Winter Park—20% of the works account for 80% or more of the total financial value. Whole-house estate tag sales and general liquidators are built to clear furniture quickly, not to market fine art to national collectors. Separating the fine art first protects the estate from accidentally selling an important painting for pennies on the dollar.

Coordinating from out of state

Many adult children and executors handling a Florida residence live in the Northeast, Midwest or abroad. Austin Helmuth works directly with out-of-state executors, estate attorneys and trust officers:

  1. Initial photo review: Family members or an estate manager send walk-through photos of the works on the walls.
  2. On-site inspection & cataloging: When needed, Austin inspects the collection in Florida, identifies signatures, mediums and labels, and separates the important works.
  3. Valuation & selling plan: You receive either a formal USPAP fair market value report, a venue-by-venue selling plan, or both.
  4. Shipping & settlement: Austin coordinates packing, transport and consignment or private sale through to final payment to the estate.

FAQ

Questions about this topic

Should we let the estate sale company sell the paintings too?

Have the fine art reviewed independently first. Local house-contents liquidators rarely reach the international or specialist collectors who pay top prices for fine art.

What is stepped-up basis for inherited art?

When you inherit art, your tax basis is generally its fair market value on the decedent's date of death. A date-of-death appraisal documents that value so you only owe capital gains tax on appreciation after that date if you sell. Consult your CPA for tax advice.

Can you help us if we live out of state and the art is in Florida?

Yes. Austin regularly works with out-of-state executors, trustees and attorneys handling estates in Sarasota, Palm Beach, Naples, Tampa, Miami and Orlando.

What if the heirs want to keep some paintings and sell the rest?

Austin can establish impartial fair market values so heirs can divide the works they want to keep fairly, and then manage the sale of the remaining pieces.
