Estate Art Appraisals in Florida
When a collector passes away, the executor or trustee usually needs to know what the art was worth on the date of death. Here is how that works.

Date-of-death fair market value
Estate appraisals generally state fair market value: the price a willing buyer and willing seller would agree on, both knowing the relevant facts. The effective date is usually the date of death, even if the appraisal is done months later. That value can matter for estate tax filings, for establishing the heirs' cost basis, and for dividing art fairly among beneficiaries.
What executors should do first
- Leave works in place where possible and take photos of each one.
- Gather receipts, prior appraisals, gallery labels and insurance schedules.
- Talk with the estate attorney or CPA about which values and dates are needed.
Out-of-state executors
Many Florida estates are handled by family or attorneys in another state. Austin works with them by phone and email and can coordinate the appraisal of a Sarasota, Naples or Palm Beach home without them traveling.
