How Much Does an Art Appraisal Cost?
There is no single price for an art appraisal. Here is what drives the fee, so you know what to send when you ask for a quote.

What determines the fee
- Number of works. One painting and a whole household collection are very different projects.
- Purpose of the appraisal. Insurance, estate, divorce and donation reports use different types of value and have different documentation needs. A donation appraisal for the IRS, for example, has specific required content.
- Research involved. Works by well-documented artists with an active auction record can be researched more quickly than obscure or unsigned works.
- Inspection. Whether the work can be reviewed from photos first, and what in-person inspection is needed.
- Timing. Deadlines from an insurer, a court or a tax filing can affect scheduling.
How fees are charged
A reputable appraiser does not charge a percentage of the appraised value. USPAP-compliant appraisals by Austin Helmuth are quoted as a fee for the work involved, and pricing is available upon request. There is no obligation when you ask for a quote.
How to get an accurate quote quickly
Send phone photos of the front, back and any signature or labels, the approximate size, what you know about where it came from, and why you need the appraisal. That is enough for a clear quote.

FAQ
Questions about this topic
How much does an art appraisal cost in Sarasota?
It depends on the number of works, the purpose, the research involved and timing. Pricing is available upon request after you send photos and a short description.
Do appraisers charge a percentage of value?
Reputable appraisers do not. Fees are based on the work involved, not on the value of the art.
Is a free online valuation the same as an appraisal?
No. An informal estimate is not a written, USPAP-compliant appraisal and will not usually satisfy an insurer, a court or the IRS.
